how to speed up my Mac

I have a 2 yr old MacBook Pro. Love it, but it's really slowing down lately.
Web browsing is really slow.

I usually run Excel/Safari/Mail/Calendar at the same time using Spaces. I usually have 6 Spaces open. One for each app.

I haven't added any memory. I think it has 2 gig RAM (how can I tell).

Any way to get it to run faster.

Takes Excel 30 seconds to load. I keep it loaded because I frequently open .xls files through the day.

I have lots of pics on Mail that I also have on iPhoto, which I have stored on an external HD, so I guess I can get rid of those off of Mail. Can having all that on slow things down??

From Apple menu select "About This Mac" and look at Memory.

In short: max out memory and install fast hdd (or SSD, but it's expensive) is the way to speed you MBP.
