How to stop being told about each individual email?

So on iOS5 i'd get to work & open up mail. It'd tell me x-amount of new emails & i'd go on & read them.
After updating to iOS7 it's damned annoying. I get a mini banner at the top telling me i got an email from this company, that person etc. So i slide the banner upwards so that i can click on the mail at the top but no, more banners about more emails keep popping up until it's done its thing.

How do i stop them?

You can change the notification settings (banners, etc.) if you go to Settings > Notification Center and find Mail there to select and change its notification settings.
