How to stop itunes from stopping podcast subscription?

I use itunes to download podcasts, but i dont use it to listen to them (theres a reason for this, but thats a story for a different day). Because i dont use iTunes to listen to them, it stops automatically downloading my podcasts after a few days. How can i stop this? Its frustrating that iTunes thinks it knows more about what i listen to than i do.

Is there any other decent *free* podcatching app available? Everything i've found is super old and outdated.

Lower left hand corner when you highlight the podcast should say "unsubscribe" or something to that effect.
