How to stop Location Services icon from appearing in menubar?

I have the box in System Preferences > Privacy > Location ticked off already but it still shows up. Any other way to stop it from showing up?

my old trick was to replace the icon file with a blank one (involved disabling SIP to swap out the files). these days (and to hide the spotlight icon and others), i use bartender; great app.
