Seriously, is there a way to reduce the amount that's locally cached? I use iMessage in iCloud on my phone for the same reason, to prevent egregious local storage use. It seems to take about 4-5GB worth of the most recent on there before kicking it to the cloud. I only have a 256GB Mac and 20GB is a lot to be using before it goes to the cloud...
