Question: I would like to start using Lightroom as my photo editing software but up until now all my photos have been stored on my iMac and in iPhoto. I am tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to 1) transfer my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and then 2) transfer that to Lightroom. I’ve been reading about this on the Web but am skeptical of trying to do it myself.

Find out the answers to these two questions in Eduardo Angel's new article, where he explains how to easily transfer your iPhoto library to an external device and then import into any version of Adobe Lightroom in 3 simple steps.

You're tearing your hair out over nothing. Just copy the photos to the external drive. Buy lightroom and follow the directions. Seriously, it's nothing.

I have photos in iPhoto and in Lightroom. But everything is also backed to a disc and external drive.

You can just import them to Lightroom, if you want to edit and use them. Click File - Import - locate the iPhoto folder. If you want, also, create a folder for the pics you use in LR. This way you will have copies in both. Or B. backup your photos to a disc in iPhoto. Erase them in iPhoto. Then upload from a disc to LR. That's how I would do it.

This guy, Adam, has some easy tutorials for Lightroom. Especially if you are just starting. Search on his page for Lightroom. He has a video on importing. Nice tips for tagging photos.

Simply "export" the images for iPhot to where ever you like. Then start up LR and import them.

You might think of a good backup system while you are at it. You will want multiple resonant copies of everything an some of those of-site.
