How do I sync a book that has not been bought in the Apple store between iOS devices?

What is the easiest and most elegant way to do get a (self-produced) epub file into iBooks on my iPad and my iPhone, and how can I then have this book so synchronized that I can continue reading on one device where I stopped on the other?

Once it's on each device, it will sync.

To add them to all devices, you can sync each device via iTunes, or you can use the Open In option via Mail, Dropbox, or countless other apps that may store the epubs.

Ok, thanks. Does that mean that it is not possible to add the book just to one device and have then iCloud sync the whole book to the other device?

I doubt it is. iBooks isn't iCloud-enabled for non-purchases. If you bought the book from iTunes, I'm sure it would go to all devices set to receive it (store downloads).
