How to sync contacts between Gmail <-> iCloud

I have an iPhone and my wife has an android phone. We share contacts so right now we are using gmail for contacts. I do not like how gmail will not let me use custom labels for my contacts. I would love to have a way to sync contacts between icloud and gmail so they both will be updated not matter where I change a contact.

Any ideas?
