How to sync iPad without updating apps?

Sorry, kind of new to this. Searched the forum, didn't find an answer. There are several apps I have on my iPad 2 which I don't want to update because of poor reviews of the update etc...
Is there any way to sync the iPad without having it automatically update all the apps? Thanks.
