Apple doesn't put the number on their cables, so if I don't mark them when I get them (with a silver Sharpie) I can't see any way to tell what level a given cable is.

Isn't there a (tiny) 5 on the metal part of the plug ?
OMG! You're right; I never thought to look that closely since I expected it to be on the black plastic next to the lightning bolt symbol.
It's nowhere on the TB 4 cable, but yes, it's there (really tiny) on the metal part of the TB5.
