hi folks,

I have the opportunity to buy an iphone running 3.1.2

how do I tell if this is untethered or not before buying it?

I don't want to get it only to find it's tethered and the jailbreak needs redoing every reboot.

many thanks

easiest way to tell is to turn off and on again.
if you can't there is one more way is look at the serial #
if the 4th and 5th # is 40 or less its old bootrom

untethered jailbreak for new bootrom is already achieved. it's only a matter of time before its released. chances are it will come out with 3.2. i wouldnt let this change your buying decision.

For those who know about tethered jailbreaks. The OP obviously had no clue so you didn't have to be nasty in your response. A simple "your welcome" would suffice.

My comment had nothing to do with tethered jailbreaks. Re-read the replies in order and you will see that.

My suggestion was not "huge" as OP claimed, just a simple common sense suggestion (I know, street slang)

It was never intended as a nasty response, perhaps you over-read the whole thing since you seem to be the only one who interpreted it as such.

No, I was going to post the same thing. It came off as belligerent.

Sometimes posts online come off the wrong way or not as intended bros.
Trust me, dhlizard is far from rude or belligerent.

@ Applejuiced Thanks !

To everyone else: My post was intended to convey that I didn't suggest anything quite so grand, just a simple suggestion to make sure he didn't get ripped off.

If I was gonna be nasty, I would have just come out and said something like the OP could have figured this out by himself or by Google.

no, I decided againt it as it had the newer 3.1.2 on it and therefore I can't jailbreak it (without having to plug it in to a pc everytime I reboot or the battery dies)

I can't wait for the 3.1.3 break to be released, but I guess I have no choice.

The phone I have has the newer version too, yet has the wifi problem (can't find any networks) and so I was hoping to get a replacement with an old version rather than have to go to apple and end up with a 3.1.3 version that I can't jailbreak at all

basically, I would rather shell out a few hundred quid than get a free replacement phone!!

I am intending to look into the new 4th generation phone this summer. Of course, I won't get one until it can be jailbroken. I am very patient, but then I have my 3GS working perfectly.

Sorry to accuse you of being nasty. I interpreted your message wrong. It is tough to glean intent from reading words and I let it get the best of me.

I have recently upgraded from a jailbroken 3G to a jailbroken 3GS. Like night and day. Apple is going to have to do something truly special with the 4th gen to make me want to move up. I am with you on the jailbreaking as well. Once I did it with my 3G I couldn't live without it. Tethering is huge for me as it allows me to be very mobile in my work environment.
