How to tell if Spotlight is Indexing?

How can I tell if it is still indexing and how long does it take ona clean and jerk install that wipes the HD ? I was experiencing VERY choppy genie efects and dock animations for about 2 hours after the install of Leopard.... oddly seems to come and go WTF

1. When you try to use Spotlight it tells you it's still indexing.
2. High processor usage from mdimport

You will see a dot in the middle of the spotlight magnifying glass, and when you click on spotlight it will tell you that its indexing.

how does the spotlight indexing effects the dock. spotlight is indexing , but the dock and minimize button on the finder window are not responding(not appearing),, is it due to the spotlight indexing is on the way..
