How to transfer purchases from one iTunes account to another?

My wife and I both switched from using our gmail iTunes account to a new iCloud me.com account when iCloud came out.

We would like to know how to transfer purchases from our old account to our new me.com accounts?

Although there have been some rumors Apple will add the ability to merge accounts like this, for now you cannot.
