Just came back from the Apple store. I wanted to test the iPhone 15 Pro Max a second time after the 17.0.3 update. When I picked up the iPhone 15 Pro Max (natural color) from a charging stand, it was normal to the touch, not warm. No apps were open. All I did was open the camera and hit the video record button. The limit at the store is 2 minutes for a video recording, it stops after that and shows a message that the limit is 2 minutes.

After less than a minute, the left side of the frame (where the buttons are) became very warm, and then the backside on the left became very warm, too. That is all I did.

I tried it again with a different phone (black), the same result. Then I tried exactly the same thing on the 15 Plus. Not the same result. The 15 Plus stayed normal to the touch.

Make of it what you will, but Apple's claims seem bogus. Maybe Instagram is an issue too, but it seems to be an Apple issue.

Edit: Apparently Apple has been using their demo app for years now.

They don’t appear to use the Guided Access mode so there’s something different about either the OS or the demo app that makes it different than a device the public can use.

You realize the store units run a different firmware (regardless of the number assigned to it) than public models right?
Why would the firmware be different? And, what effect would that have ?

Thanks for the tip. Even though it is Spring here in Melbourne, it's getting a bit chilly the last few days.

I'll try this handwarmer trick.

Because the in store devices won’t have the fix installed… they won’t get updated like a regular phone and run demo software based on 17.0.0

People who have updated, don’t have any issues (those that do are likely experiencing issues due to an app or something else) but it’s pretty much known that the last release 17.0.3 has stopped any overheating issues, which didn’t affect most devices anyway.

The in store devices run 100% screen brightness and are on charge all the time, which also won’t help with any heat issues.

So, IOS version and Firmware refer to the same thing on the iPhone? I thought maybe they were two distinct things, like the OS and the kernal.

Go to the Apple store and check the iOS version. I did that today, it's 17.0.3

I don’t think so. If anything, matching the latest release version can help better demo the hardware. One notable omission on demo phone tho is what I call “fully functional” iOS. As in, you can use it normally and install any app you want, rather than stuck with demo version of those apps and no way to sign out demo accounts, among many other things.

There is usually some delay on demo phone updating to the latest iOS but they do it fairly quickly. They won’t stick to iOS 17.0.0 forever.

People mixes them up often, and truth of the matter is nowadays firmware and operating system for the most part are used interchangeably, without clear distinction.

Firmware and or iOS are irrelevant. The 15 Plus didn't heat up. This hasn't been an issue with previous models at or outside Apple stores.

Tested my 15 Pro Natural Titanium shooting a 4k24 video and didn’t even warm up in 2 minutes so I extended to 5 minutes and still nothing. Only thing this tells us is that maybe certain units have issues while others don’t. My phone also never had the overheating issue even before the update.

Same for my iPhone 15 Pro in black and I also shoot several videos over 10 minutes long and no overheating. I do believe that folks have had the issue but my phone did not have even before the update
