I know I can mute it with the shift key but does anyone know a way to mute it all the time and without also holding down the shift key?

You would think that turning off the OS alerts would do it but it doesn't turn off the volume alert.

in the system preferences go to sound,
then the Sound Effects tab, and uncheck "play feedback when sound is changed"

i had been trying to figure it out too.

I think SilentPanda means you can do it by checking "Play feedback when volume is changed" in the Soundeffect tab. You can locate it at Sound in System Preference.

Ha ha! Thanks! I was also looking for this. The popping is so damn annoying when you've got headphones on, and it's on the higher volume settings.

I am forever indebted to you all who answered this question. Ill get you all 17" mbp's hahalolol. When im in pro tools and i have to change the volume of my studio moniters its enough to hurt your ears hearing that damn pop. Im so happy.

Tells ya that there is no such things as stupid, silly, simple, etc. question. You would be surprised how many people have the same questions. :)
