Currently my iPhone shows a new SMS text message when it arrives. I have set the Show SMS preview in Passcode Lock to off and turned passcode off but I still see the SMS message preview.

This means that if I leave my iPhone on my desk at work, someone could see a private SMS message.

Is there any way to trun this off?

Cheers.

in passcode lock settings you can disable the message preview. is this what you were looking for ?

i believe he is looking for a way to disable the preview while not having to passcode lock his phone... it should be a feature because i want this too... it has acctually gotten me into a little trouble with ladies before  .... so to answer the original posters question... i dont think that there is any way to do that....

after re-reading the op, that would appear to be what your looking for. AFAIK there is no such feature yet.

Thanks guys. Seems like a daft way for it to work!

I've just been playing about with this (didn't know about this feature) and it seems perfectly sensible to me.

What would be the point in disabling SMS previews when you don't have pass code lock turned on anyway? If somebody really wanted to view your SMS, then they would just be able to go to the SMS app and view it. If you are worried about people being nosy, you should turn the pass code lock on.

Terrible

Why does the name still show up? What kind of an idiot created this feature? If you turn off SMS preview, it should be OFF. Meaning that NOTHING shows up. But that is not the case. When u turn it off, you STILL get a preview showing the name. Terrible.

Lol as far as I can remember, every phone I have had notified you that you have a text message. No point checking your phone every 2 minutes to see if you have a text or not, just check it when you get one.

Jailbreak and install lockinfo. You can setup the home screen ad lock screen to not show SMS previews.

So the OP wants no message preview but doesn't want to put a passcode lock on the phone? That doesn't make any sense. That's like putting a security system on the bathroom and then leaving your front door open. Not trying to rip you here but it just seems strange.

Main reason

He main reason for me needing this option is so that the girls I am with dont see texts from other girls I am also with. It doesn't matter if my phone is locked I just don't want a message popping up saying I have a text from Kelly when I am hanging out with Kim. It can really ruin a night. What idiot set up this function?

With the new iOS software, the controls for SMS previews are no longer under privacy/passcode lock. Try settings>notifications>messages. There you should find options for both SMS preview and doing away with seeing a new message on your lock screen at all. This SHOULD work when passcode lock is not enabled as well. Best of luck.
