How to turn on AirPlay

I have iPad air and cannot get it to play or mirror from my iPad air to the Apple TV.i have a tick at the side of iPad then when I try to tick tv and mirror the tick Goes to TV / mirror then goes back to iPad,what do I need to do please help.

Have you tried rebooting your iPad and Apple tv? Also are your iPad and Apple tv updated the latest version of iOS?
