I just bought a 3gs that has is only on 3.0. I want to unlock it. Is it possible to upgrade and still unlock? How to just unlock on 3.0?

Are you on a mac or PC?
If you are mac, use PWNAGE tool to make a custom IPSW which will NOT upgrade your baseband but upgrade the firmware to iOS4.1
If yo are on PC, Redsn0w will do something similar.

Thanks again. As directed I downloaded the file: iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore along with redsn0w-mac_0.9.4 and followed the step by step directions. But once trying the RESTORE with the listed file, after awhile a window popped up stating "This device is not eligible for requested Restore."
Any suggestions?
Now I am in real trouble
I tried another version on iClarified that was 4.1 and now the screen went blank and it won't turn on. iTunes says that it is now in recovery mode and must be restored. Now what?

I really hope that you didn't go ahead and restore it to an official 4.1, because then you're SOL.
You can upgrade to 4.0.1 and just ultrasn0w that if you haven't yet upgraded to 4.1

This was the upgrade I downloaded on iClairified and tried to use: iPhone2,1_4.1_8B117_Restore I am not sure what happened as the iphone screen is now black and in iTunes says that it is in recovery mode. What should I do now? Is there a way to check if the phone was upgraded?

Now you have to restore using the custom 4.1 ipsw you just created in Pwnage. After that Cydia would on the screen. Launch Cydia and to unlock you have to install Ultrasn0w under --> Manage, Sources, Edit, Add, repo666.ultrasn0w.com
