You need to activate it. You need a sim from the original carrier who sold it in Sweden.

As far as I'm aware, only if you have your SHSH blobs saved for that phone. Since you just bought it, I suspect that you don't.

ok, thanks, but how to know the carrier that my iphone locked on?
some known info: imei ,serial no,iccid

If it's a Swedish iPhone it's locked to either of these three providers

Telia
Telenor
Tre

You can order free Pay As You Go SIM-cards from http://www.gratiskontantkort.se and have that shipped to you via a local contact or order a Phonebook Card to activate your 3GS with.

Currently, these are your only options

does the phonebook sim card trick work? i depend on my JB iPhone and if i upgrade it and lock it anc cant jailbreak it im screwed... does it really work?

If you live in the US, I've heard you can use a prepaid SIM. However, I've never tried it, so YMMV. Also, don't upgrade. There is no such thing as an accidental upgrade. Apple gives you the option so you aren't presented with another update notification. Utilize it. It's not difficult.

This is a good thing to reiterate. Anyone who has any interest whatsoever in jailbreaking/unlocking/downgrading should check that box in itunes that says "don't notify me again" and nullify any and all chances of an "accidental" upgrade. If and when you need to upgrade, you'll be able to just fine. But downgrading is another issue altogether. Much harder to go back than to click one button and ruin everything.
