im windows user new to mac how do i unzip rar files?

Well, technically, you can't "unzip" a rar file, on Windows or any other platform. ZIP is one kind of archival utility and RAR is another one. You can "decompress" a RAR file, or you can "unrar" it.

As above said i also use unrarx just double click and it will do the job, only if the files u downloades contain a password, open first unrarx and fil in the password and then go on ...

unrarX is quite inconvenient with passwords. It happens on some installs that the enter password option is nowhere to be found. It is just not there. I found I wasn't alone with that problem but nobody seems to have an answer. Took me a while to figure out who to open a pw protected rar without getting into the terminal.
Now I just use The Unarchiver works flawlessly. I also use the Pathfinder in exchange for the finder and it uses stuffIt by default, that one has a very poor progress display.

The unarchiver is my default but sometimes I use unrarX. On the rare case that neither works, the RAR expander usually does.
