My MBP came with iPhoto. When I try to update it so I can use photo stream it directs me to the app store to purchase iLife '11. Do I have to make the $14.99 purchase to use photo stream? I figured since my computer came with the program fully functional, I already owned a copy. Any insight would be much appreciated.

P.S. My copy of iPhoto is currently at 8.1.2

You do already own a copy. However, you own an older version. Sorry!

The way that Apple did these things in the past was that you got, for free, whatever version of iLife was out when you bought your computer. If a new version came out and you wanted it, you had to buy it.

You're on iLife 09 (iPhoto 8.x) and iLife 11 (iPhoto 9.x) came out a year ago. If you want the updates, you'll need to pay for them. Think of it like an upgrade of MS Office or Adobe Creative Suite rather than the OS.
