Should I backup my iPhone 4 on iOS 5.x, and then update to iOS6 from the backed up iOS 5 once I have my iPhone 5?

Or

Should I update to iOS6 on Thursday, back it up, then load it onto my iPhone 5?


Last question: I hear the best way to go about the iPhone 5 is by doing a complete restore and not loading up any prior backups. Is there any way to do this while still having all your old text conversations on the phone, and a few app's data? Or is the backup an all or nothing deal? It just kinda sucks because it seems like either I have to keep all my files and history or start fresh and have the OS speedy.

Apologies for the rant. It's just I heard many people restore it on these forums and one guy clarified by restore he meant not loading up a backup at all.
