how to upgrade 3GS iPad baseband to 5.01?

Can anyone help with this? I'm looking to upgrade a friends iPhone 3GS from 4.3.3 with iPad baseband to 5.01. Will this effect anything, whats the easiest way to do it and can the baseband be changed?
