iPod touch How to Upgrade a jailbroken ipod touch 3rd gen to version 4.2

I want to upgrade my ipod touch to verison 4.2 and its 3.1.3 and when i try to an error pops up and then it wont let me upgrade it. And if the update works, will i lose my all my apps? and if i dont then will all the game data in the apps will they delete?? anyone who can help me will be great thanks
