How to upgrade from iPhone 2G to 3G?

If I go to apple, show them i have an activated AT&T first gen iphone will they just give me the iPhone or would i still need to actvate at home?
 
You'll still have to pay for it and activate. I "think" you are still being required to activate in store but I could be way off the mark there.
