my friend wants to upgrade to OS X Lion, they currently have leopard, i believe it is 10.5. do they have to purchase and install snow leopard before they can install lion?

Yes, you need to buy and upgrade to SL first, so you can have access to the Mac App Store to download Lion. You cannot upgrade your existing installation, apps and user data intact, from Leopard - but you can erase & install a fresh copy of Lion using the OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive.
