So I went ahead and purchased an iPhone 3G to replace my 2G (and I love it!). I still want to use my old iPhone 2G as an iPod "Touch", but I understand I can no longer upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1 as the iPhone will look to be activated. I was wondering if the appropriate approach would be to jailbreak instead, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

I also upgraded to the 3G and have a deactivated 2G iPhone. It works just fine as an iPod touch. Itunes recognizes it just fine and I have been able to apply all the firmware updates right up to 2.1.
