So I have my laptop and a tv that doubles as a monitor. How would I set up dual monitors so I can have my word document on one monitor and Pro Tools software running on the other monitor?

I usually just hook my laptop upto the TV Via hdmi but as soon as i do that the tv just mirrors my laptop..how do i set it up so i can use both and move my mouse from screen to screen?

I have the same model. You need two Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt to HDMI adapters. Try Newegg or Monorpice.

If you mean using the laptop as one screen and the tv as the second screen, then under System Preferences > Displays there is an Arrangement tab that has a checkbox for mirroring displays. Uncheck the box.
