To help reduce the spread of the Corona virus, the Austrian government is now providing free, mandatory face masks to all supermarkets. They need to be worn upon entry.

Independent if this makes sense or not (don't want to start that discussion), the problem now is that faceid no longer works, pretty much downgrading iPhone user experience.

There is a trick but it takes a bit of experimentation:
- setup faceid as usual
- than add an 'alternative appearance'
- cover the left half of your mount and nose with the mask
- play a bit with the until the 'face partially covered' message disappears and recognition is ready to start
- when ready, check if it works, if not: try pulling the mask down a little bit but keeping the nose covered
- if it continues to fail, reset faceid and try again

It kind of got it working but it remains a bit of a pain...

First time since long that I wish my phone also had a fingerprint scanner!

That article is kind of silly. It's not called 1/2 face ID. The authentication is supposed to cover your entire face. Just unlocking based on eyes and half of your nose wouldn't be as secure. I've just been using the pin code when my lower face is covered.

The issue you describe is no different to the one faced by those that have models of iPhone prior to the X. If the users wear gloves they can't use TouchId.

In that instance i'd imagine they just use passcode instead of cutting a hole in their gloves.

For the short time you have to wear the mask just use the passcode.

Why? As a human, can you tell who somebody is when they're wearing a mask or scarf? What about when they wear sunglasses?

If a human can do it in a fraction of a second, why can't a computer?

Humans aren't computers. If somebody says a command in a fraction of a second I can interpret it easily while Siri might (does) often struggle.

This is like saying you want Touch ID with only half of the fingerprint used. The full fingerprint obviously adds more complexity and makes it more secure.

A false assumption. Both are computable problems. You're assuming that there's some magic that people have that computers don't.

You just made my point with Touch ID. It only looks at a small area of the fingerprint. That's why the enrollment process has you scan the edges, and that's why FIPS-certified fingerprint scanners have a much larger scan area.

Commercial facial recognition software can already recognize people wearing half masks. And that's without IR dot projection. Apple needs to catch up in this regard.

I got the same problem with this stupid Face ID. Apple was greedy not putting a fingerprint sensor under the display of the iPhone.

Apple builds terrible phones for situations like this. When I am outside, I have to constantly put in my password.

Situations like Covid 19? Face ID is older than this pandemic, how was Apple supposed to anticipate face masks being normal?

The point is that Apple should have offered this by default (even if there was no coronavirus) considering this is not something new as Android phones have this for a while now.

So I am being screwed by Apple their greediness.

Man that’s a smart government.

Or you could just enter your pin code when face ID fails

Or apple could have not ditched touchID (i.e., put BOTH sensors in) for situations like this where your face is either obscured or not convenient to point at your phone.

I'm not buying high end devices over a thousand dollars to have to enter my pin like some pleb.

I don't understand how needing to type in a passcode while your face is being covered is "screwed"

Then go ahead and use Android, which has less privacy and security 🙂

Zillions (well maybe not zillions) of people still use the iPhone 5. They're used to entering a passcode every time the screen locks - cuz it doesn't have TouchID. They're not complaining.

Nice try to dodge how greedy Apple by not putting a fingerprint sensor under the display to save money.

You know Apple could have easily done it as the technology exists for a while now.

The iPhone 5 is not a phone from 2019 were phones have both facial recognition + fingerprint scanner under the display.

And in times like this, fingerprint sensor on the display is great because FaceID doesn't work with masks to protect yourself against corona.

It is just funny that I got $1500 512 gb iPhone 11 Pro Max and I have to use my password every time when I am outside.

What if you're also wearing gloves though

I only wear gloves if I enter into the supermarket. And I don't use my phone there as I am focussed on avoiding people and keep as much distance as possible.

So...you only wear your gloves around other people?
