How to use phone headset as mic for Macbook?

I have a phone headset with what I assume is a 2.5mm plug (too small for the audio in port on my Macbook). If possible, what adapter would work so I can use the headset as a microphone on the Macbook? Do some 2.5 to 3.5 adapters not work for audio input? It's unclear from the description and reviews on some of the available adapters.
