How to use the audio jack on my 2012 MBP as audio/mic input?

Hello, ive read that the headphone jack doubles as a microphone input. Ive looked up the how-to videos and it shows a drop down box with 2 options. Mine does not have that. it is a mid 2012 cMBP 13" purchased just before christmas this year. running mountain lion

Since I do not have a Mac with only one audio port, I cannot test it, but I guess you are referring to this?
