I used to use either a Mac or PC. It was easy to view photos at 100% through various programs. Photoshop, Canon raw, etc. It was just a regular menu item. I always just used a keyboard shortcut so I could see the image at full resolution. Checking for focus accuracy, noise, whatever.

So how do you do this on a phone or even the iPad. When I double tap, it just doesn’t seem to zoom in far enough to feel like full res. And I obviously can’t tell by pinch zooming.

Anybody know how to view at 100% on the iPhone or iPad? Since it’s not native to the Photos app, is there a free photo editing app that makes this easy?

Thanks!

Disclaimer: I don’t know about the latest Adobe PS versions, but: when you view a file at 100% in older Photoshop Adobe coded that 100% at a time where the resolution on (almost) all screens was 72 dpi (meaning that for quite some time even on a Mac the default ›100%‹-view in PS is almost always larger).

E.g. iPhone 13 delivers 460ppi # depending on the display you compare that to, it is e.g. 4x higher on the the iPhone.

The rectangle in the ›Navigator‹-window in the upper right corner of the screen shot below shows what part of a 3958x2639 pixels photo represents correctly said ›100%‹-view on an 11” iPP 2020:

A double tap in e.g. Apple Photos zooms the image to:

which is roughly at 188%, quite nice to judge sharpness IMHO:

You really want just the correct ›100%‹?

TL;DR:
  • the default double tap zoom level in Apple Photos on Apple mobile is different to the "classic" ›100%‹-view in (older) Photoshop.
  • It‘s closer to 200% due to the ppi of the actual screen.
  • My educated guess here: it’s probably to allow the observer a better visual judgement of sharpness, chromatic aberrations, etc.. 🤓
  • there are image processing apps available which allow for (correct) ›100%‹-view and/or numerically adjustable zoom levels.
  • of course one can further zoom in or out using gestures. 🤜🤛😊

accidently posted an empty conment. Changed it to „ignore“ - of course I referred to my comment. In hindsight not really “cristal clear” 🤣😂😅. Then decided to contribute something. :)

Thanks for your reply! Very detailed!
