I am not going to be gaming and most likely will rarely stream 4k content. I am just looking for extra screen real estate when doing programming.

I'll -guess- that if you run the 4k display in either "full resolution" mode, or in HiDPI mode ("looks like 1080p"), it will do fine.

However -- if you try to run it in "scaled" mode (such as "looks like 1440p"), it will bog down somewhat because of the extra processing involved.

Will you be able to read text at full 4k resolution on a "regular-sized" display?
(by "regular-sized", I mean 27" or even 32")...

I run a 40-inch, 4k monitor off my 2018 mbp 13. I run it in clamshell mode so it's a single desktop. I don't experience any issues, though the fan kicks on when I boot Windows in VMWare. My mbp 13 is top-spec'd if that makes any difference.

I'm doing programming on a 34" 4k monitor with a 2016 13" Macbook Pro, and I'm finding at high screen real estate resolutions, the CPU performance really starts to slow down. If you're working in Docker with lots of services, it's _very_ noticeable.

I'm not exactly sure where the bottleneck is, I'm considering an eGPU but no one has given me an answer yet:
