Someone I know got lion for their macbook and they hated it. It slowed down their computer and they couldn't figure out how to revert back to snow leopard. I have an imac and I'm wondering how well lion will run on it. Alot of new software is built for lion and I should probably upgrade but I don't want to be stuck with it if I don't like it. I got it for christmas 2010 so it's a relatively new machine.

It will run fine. For optimal performance, back up your data and do a clean install. Then manually restore your data.
Yes, a 2010 iMac can run mountain Lion. And yes, You'll still have to pay for ML. But it's like $20-30.
