How would I backup applications like photoshop and final cut and restore them?

I'm wanting to do a clean install of tiger on this used powerbook I bought and it has some programs I would like to keep. I don't have any of the disks that were meant for the applications. Could you guys tell me if my plan would work..

Plug in my external hard drive, go into finder, and search for the applications I want to keep. Then, drag the application into the external drive. After I have reinstalled tiger, I drag the application back to there place.

If that wouldn't work, can someone please give me instruction on how to do it, if it's possible.
