How would I go about finding one and setting up a plan

I am going to be getting an iphone for me while my brother and mom will be getting another at&t phone for our family plan. If we go to an at&t store, will i simply have to wait if they don't have it to set up our family plan or can we set up the plan and have the phone shipped?

Also at other stores such as best buy and radio shack, or any other store. If they have it, would I have to set up a plan their? Would we be able to set up an at&t family account their or what?

I am kinda new to this getting a new phone and a new plan thing so can any one help?
