Ok I want to make a smart playlist that includes all my 5 star songs that are pop and R&B, simple right? I thought all I would have to do is do 5 star rating + genre: pop + genre r&b, well it doesn't work, I guess the two genre's cancel each other out. How should I go about doing this?

You are going to have to do it is stages.

Create playlist A: which picks songs that are 5 rated and Pop
Create playlist B: which picks songs that are 5 rated and r&b
Create playlist C which picks songs that are in playlist A or playlist B

Edit: You can actually do it in one less step
Create playlist A: which picks songs that are either pop OR r&b
Create playlist B: which picks songs that are in playlist A AND are 5 rated.

They key is the "all" or "any" selector in the dialog box.

Yes, but as you only choice is all or any, and not a combination of both in a single playlist he is going to have to create his particular playlist in stages.

Absolutely, buy you didn't explain how to do that. You just said "and" and "or" which don't appear in the dialog. :p

Fair point, so to revise my original instructions:

Create Playlist A:
Match ANY for the following,
Genre is pop
Genre is r&b

Create Playlist B:
Match ALL of the following.
Playlist is A
Rating is 5 star

1. Make a folder (command+option+shift+N)
2. make the playlists described above
3. if they aren't in there already, drag the playlists into the folder
4. the folder will contain all the music contained in its playlists

folders rule :D

Actually, good idea, but if you are going to use a folder, then he needs the following two playlists:

Playlist A:
Match ALL of the following
Genre is pop
Rating is 5 star

Playlist B:
Match ALL of the following
Genre is r&b
Rating is 5 star

Now, put playlists A & B inside a folder, now when you highlight the folder you'll get all the songs contained in either folder, which is exactly what is needed.

You can actually do this in one playlist - I have a few like this.

1. create smart playlist
2. 1st criteria is "rating IS 5 stars"
3. 2nd criteria is "genre IS NOT ____" where the blank is every OTHER genre you dont want in this playlist. Obviously, there will be lots of this category. Once you get it narrowed down to the only exclusions are the 2 genres you do want, you are set. Its a round-about way, I know... but it uses less playlists, which is ideal for not cluttering your itunes sidebar.

Well, if the two playlists are in a folder, you can just collapse the folder and it appears like a single playlist

Also, if you add more genre's in the future you'll have to remember to go back in and edit the playlist.

Yeah, the folders apply an implicit "or" to join all the contents.

I have a few playlists like the one described (Genre does not contain "Book" or "Spoken" or "Poetry" or "Speeches" ...) and they are a pain to maintain.
