whenever i close iPhoto (OS X Tiger) the application quits (shuts down completely) unlike iTunes for example.

when you close iTunes, it keeps running, so when you open it again, it pops up right away.
iPhoto on the other hand has to launch first which is quite annoying.

can anyone give me a good reason why this is the case?
and is there a way to disable this?

iPhoto is a single window application, you close that single window it will quit the app. Most apps are multiple window applications, so closing the window (even if it's the last one) will not quit the app.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5B108 Safari/525.20)

If you are looking to keep iPhoto open but out of the way you can Hide it by clicking Apple + H or by going to iPhoto on the menu bar and clicking Hide iPhoto
