One thing that worried me about iOS 10's elimination of "Swipe to Unlock" was what happens if the Home Button dies suddenly, because pushing the Home Button is how to bring up the Passcode screen and unlock. This is particularly worrisome for older phones without TouchID.
In the event of Home Button failure while in Lock Screen,
(1) Swipe down to access Notifications screen OR swipe sideways to access Widgets screen.
(2) Both these screens have "Search" field at the top. In this field, type in the name of the App you want to launch. iOS will give you a list of apps found. Click on the app you want, and iOS will bring up the passcode screen to unlock the device so you can use the app.
I recommend immediately searching for and accessing the Settings App and enabling Assistive Touch (General, Accessibility) to restore virtual Home Button access.
Hope this is useful.
