HP 6 Printer does not print correctly under OS/X 10.6.2

We have an HP LaserJet 6 and we just received a converter cable to go from Parallel to USB.

However, although the iMac "sees" the HP6 and can "print" to it, all we get on the paper is garbage characters.

Is this a known problem with Snow Leopard or could we have a bad cable, or what could be causing this? (The printer works fine under Windows so it's not the printer.)

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
