HP scanner – 4850.

Anybody use one of these of similar?

I have been given this scanner & set it up this morning. I have a few issues. I downloaded the driver (for mac) & the manual.

1 – I would like to scan the images IN PHOTOSHOP (CS5). I have had many different scanners & always found that more controllable than the supplied software. I would normally go file/import & the scanner would normally be listed. (its not)

2 – if not, can I scan in adobe 1998? Or is it just as effective to “convert to the working space” (using the HP software)

3 – when opening the HP software there is an initial screen “choose a scan profile”, so setting for print or slide or neg. Once past that & done a scan (of say a print) & then wanting to scan (say) a slide, can I get back to that screen?

4 – how do I scan 645/6x7 negs? The instructions say that it can be done, but on indication of how. The tranny neg holder is for 35mm.

5 the hp software appears to default to pixels per centimeter, is there any way of setting permanently, by default, to inch?

6 – when scanning negs, I cannot save the scan, as the software is incessantly going round & round in circles! “SMART FRIEND ALERT” advising me that I can improve the quality by scanning one at a time, but I cannot select just one frame.

7 – The scanner seams reticent to scan at high DPI settings. overall the quality of the tests appears somewhat lacking! Am I expecting too much, of it – i.e. be able to make an acceptable copy, of a customer supplied trany or neg? I suspect I am, despite this scanner being reasonably expensive when new.
