Why is OS X's scanner support so terrible?

I borrowed an HP PSC 1410v all-in-one unit to scan a bunch of photos for a project, but I can't get it to scan! I downloaded all the HP drivers and utilities and rebooted, and it says it can't find the scanner.

I also tried the VueScan demo and couldn't get it to work there either.

The scanner works fine when connected to my friends PC... why won't OS X connect to it? Anyone else have better luck with the HP scanners?

It is not OS X. It is the Hp drivers for OS X. I had this same problem with my parents HP printer/scanner/faxer/copier when i tried to install teh stuff. I ended up having to call HP and they took me through uninstalling weird, and obscure files in all kinda of places before i could reinstall the drivers and then it would work.

Also, do you have the most updated drivers?? And, if i remember correctly, you need to start ImageZone (an HP application) and go to the scanning part; then press the scan button on top of the unit and it should work then.

I have never been impressed with HP stuff and i try to avoid them. I prefer Canon because i have never had a problem with them.

Well this is really pissing me off...

I uninstalled all HP stuff, then downloaded the latest HP software for the 1410 series all-in-ones, installed it and rebooted. Then I opened the Image Zone app first like you said, and clicked on the scanner app from there. After all this it still says the scanner is not there when it opens. And pressing the scan button on the scanner doesnt work either.

I did manage to get it to scan in the VueScan app, but it's a demo and places watermarks over all the scans until you buy it–and I see no reason to spend $50 on that software when the HP driver should work just fine.

Any other ideas how to make this work, or are there any free apps that provide generic scanner support?

HP does suck, but...

I had this exact same problem, with the exact same printer. I just went and downloaded this driver set:
HP Photosmart, PSC and Officejet Full Feature Software/Drivers - Mac OS X v10.3 and v10.4 (Universal)

It sort of installed - it died mid-install for an unspecified reason. However, it got far enough that I was able to get HP device manager to actually recognize the printer, and now Image Zone works.

Scanning issue with Mac OS X 10.6

I had the same issue with my HP Photosmart C2780. After I upgraded to snow leopard the scan to computer feature stopped working. I did some research and found the following.

According to HP the Scanning interface is now built into Snow Leopard and supported with the Apple Image Capture application.

NOTE:* HP Scan Pro software (from Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5) is not supported in Snow Leopard. The HP icon for HP Device Manager still in the dock after upgrade is not functional and should be removed.

NOTE:* Scan support from pushing the Scan button on the printer is not supported with this version of the ICA scan interface built into Snow Leopard. Scan functionality is supported by scanning directly from the computer.

I did a search in the finder for "image capture" launched the application and was able to find my scanner. Loaded the document into the scanner, then followed the on screen directions on my Mac. You can longer use the scanner buttons on the printer.

@cwright

Maybe jenzjen's answer to my difficulties could hint you to the solution, although my problem is with a canon multi-device.

Another free scanner is Exact scan, if Vue scan worked for you, this could be a solution. It's a trial version for 14 days, but could be sufficient for your purpose.

I hope it works! And if anybody could help with my problem (see link above) I'd still be very grateful...:)
