Is there a noticeable difference?
The reason I ask is because at work my iphone 3g's 3g service is horrible. I have ATT.

My friend has a iphone 4 but has verizon and has no problems with DL speed. Is this due to a better receiver in the i4 or do you think its service related?

Will I see a difference in DL speed on an i4

Doubt it. If the carrier doesnt have the capacity (which is usually the issue) the new chip cant get used fully.

It should be easy to tell. Run a speedtest and see if you can hit 3.6mbps (450kBps). If not the new chip won't help.

ahh good point, so if I am getting 3.6 then theres a possibility that a i4 will get more.

what about random 3g hangups, is that normal on the iphone 3g because I always had that problem. maybe a hardware issue?

Listen man, the 3G is just a bad product. I promise the new phone will get better speeds. With dual antennas and HSPA+, you'll be doing just fine. Its much more advanced tech.

And when I went to 3GS from the 3G I noticed much faster data speeds, so doing a speed test on your phone wont help.
