Hi -

I'm new to iWeb as a tool for building web sites (yes, I kinda know its
limitations), and have some HTML experience and have developed sites on
other template-based systems. I've read a little about "HTML snippets" for
iWeb, but I don't think those will do what I want.

I need to do some basic HTML in a site I'm working on for a neighbor.

Two simple things are:

- an off-page link (<a href="http://www.somesite.com">click here</a>)
- a PayPal "button" (5-6 lines of HTML that display a clickable image)

Can I just add this HTML in the text of an iWeb template? How does iWeb
know it's HTML and not just more text?

Thanks!

To add a text hyperlink, type it in and highlight. Use the Link Inspector to convert selected text into a hyperlink. Click Inspector in the toolbar, and then click the Link Inspector button. In the Link Inspector, select "Enable as a hyperlink," and then choose an option from the Link To pop-up menu.

To add HTML on your page don't just type it in. If you’re in iWeb ’09, drag the HTML Snippet from the Media pane into place on your web page. If you’re in iWeb ’08, you’ll use the Insert menu, Insert -> HTML Snippet. For versions prior to that, export HTML edit manually, but you'll need to do this each site change (stupid), or use a third party add-on like web enhancer which isn't free, is bloatware (more stupid), and is of course unnecessary if you're using any recent version. Recent iWeb allows more standard developer tools than in the past, but remember - iWeb is not intended for dynamic site development with database, server side scripting, etc. Just remember what it's used for - we here on the forum always say stuff like this, it's almost a default answer.

BTW, if the PayPal button is an image you have and wish to insert and hyperlink it, then insert the PayPal button graphic then select it on your page by clicking on it. Then, look in the Inspector under the Link button and you will see how to enable as a hyperlink. You then enter the html code from PayPal there and it links the button graphic to PayPal's site.

Thank you!

I was thinking it had to be something simple and straightforward . . . ;^)

The site I'm working on will at most be 3 pages of mostly text and a few
pictures - my neighbor is a comic, and this would be the online place where
people could go to find out where she'll be performing next.

Thank you!

Steve

Who's the comic? I'm near DC and enjoy going to the Improv at Dupont Circle every now and then, if your comic friend is on the road...

Her name is Gail Jones ("The Southern Belle") - she's mostly doing things on
the west coast (SF Bay area and LA), but has managed to get to Las Vegas
and Utah, with one very far-away trip to Scotland.

I just found out I have distant cousins in Falls Church . . . ;^)

Well, good luck with the site - let us know if you need any more help!

For those interested, here is the comic's MySpace page plus I found a site with a couple of video clips covering politics to stuff I can't mention here - she's quite blue and it's funny to see a grandmother type spew these zingers!

There's your free advertising for your neighbor comic, tell her she's welcomed to come to the State Theatre in Falls Church where I am - it's a small venue that alot of comics do gigs while on tour in the mid-atlantic region, aside from the Improv in DC I mentioned earlier which is 20 mins away by metro.

Cheers

That's why I didn't provide the link earlier . . . ;^) She's actually placed
pretty high in some local competitions.

Thanks again for your help - I need to get her to sit down and make a
decision on what she wants before I can proceed, so this may never happen.
But at least I now know how to do HTML in iWeb . . . ;^)
