I have had my 3GS since they day it came out and no problems. Today, however, major weirdness ensued. I charged it overnight. Left for work at about 7 and by 11, my iPhone's battery was almost depleted. I then charged it again, and by 5, dead again. I got home, plugged it in (after rebooting it), and after an hour it was claiming it was charged. Tried using it and within 30 mins it shut itself down with the red lightning bolt symbol.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

I am now trying to charge it turned off, but right now, I am a bit freaked out that it's dying. I didn't even *use* it today.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing. Do not turn it on while it's charging. Let it charge overnight. If the problem persists, do a DFU restore and set up as a new iPhone. If it still persists, make an appointment at the genius bar...
