I almost went to the art institute there this year, but finances got in the way, and so I am spending my first year of college for free at a state school. Hopefully, I'll be able to transfer there next year, but I'm sure mom will be happy I'm not there now (you know how mom's are). Don't know of the restaurant location they are talking about though...

Was in an outlying suburb about 45 minutes away from Pittsburgh called Beaver County.

It was at a chi chis'.

Probably transferred from lettuce that thet got in the southwest (maybe mexico) where they are famed for using septic water to wash the produce.

Very common practice apparently.

kinda gross to think it was transferred through poop.

Oh. and its pittsburgH. ;) with an H.

I heard about this last week. Kinda weird stuff.

There used to be a ChiChi's around here years ago, but it closed up shop & became something worse (Bennigan's I think).

sorryH, butH IH wasH typingH fastH, youH knowH? :p

But 3 people have died and its not going to help ChiChi's reputation any....there is only one ChiChi's left around NOVA that I know of, all the others have folded or been bought out.

Common frikken sense.

I'm just glad I have tons of tomahtoeseses and onjuns and garlics and peppers and whatnot from my summer garden.

I haven't been out to a restaurant in a week or so. My friends are actually afraid to go.

Though we did have pizza at band practice on weds, and while watching news about the onion action beig the culprit, my drummer was stuffing his trap with pizza with onion topping. he just let it all fall out of his mouth and grabbed a slice of pepperoni.

heh.

Hopefully the onions we get in Massachusetts don't come from Pennsylvania. I remember fondly the green onions that my father and grandfather grew in their gardens. Most of the onions my wife buys have a purple covering. The best onion of all is a nice sweet Vidalia onion!

Hepatitis A Outbreak Blamed On Green Onions But the origin of the scallions and how they were tainted is unknown.

The hepatitis A outbreak at a Chi-Chi's Mexican restaurant near Pittsburgh is the largest known such outbreak in U.S. history. At least 575 people have been sickened and three died. The restaurant is now closed.

Meanwhile, Mexican scallions from companies linked to outbreaks of hepatitis A are getting held at the U.S. border.

The vegetables came from Mexico.
In Mexico, they rinse their vegetables in bleech. Why?
They practically crap on their vegetables. They have a primitive sewage system, and poor regulations on what is good and what is bad.
Thank NAFTA for this one.

Get vaccinated if you are worried at all about hepatitis. There are vaccines for hep A and B. You will need a booster a few months later for maximum protection and then you're set for years.
