I have been trying to investigate why the "other" space on my Ipad continues to get larger every time I sync new photos. I currently have 5GB of "Photos" and 3.5GB of "Other". When I look using Disk Aid, I see the majority of this is driven by the "thumbnails" folder under PhotoData. The total of my 158x158, 240x240, and 332x332 ithmb files are almost 2.7GB in size!!!

I tried deleting these but as soon as I resync they come back at the same size. I also tried restoring but same thing.

Anybody else experiencing this? How can these thumbnails be almost the same size as the collective sum of all of my photos individually? Help!

Anyone have insight on this? I tried running another experiment last night where I had my Ipad sync a smaller folder of pictures that were a little over 3GB in size on my computer. Before the sync, my Other was at .87GB. After the sync, my Other was at 1GB and as I suspected, the .ithmb files were at 300MB when I looked with Disk Aid.

Is this normal behavior for the .ithmb files on the new Ipad? I am loading 9000 pictures on my Ipad which means my .ithmb files are huge (showing over 4GB of Other when sync is finished). Any insight from those who have a lot of photos on the new Ipad and could tell me the size of their .ithmb files using Disk Aid or another tool would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure if this is relevant to your situation, but someone recently mentioned that they were able to get rid of Other by turning the iPad completely off, then back on, then syncing. Their Other was being caused by video files, but who knows, it could work with photos too.

That's not the problem...I have tried turning off and on, restoring as new iPad, backing up from iCloud, etc. It's definitely these .ithmb files. If I uncheck "Photos" and resync, my "Other' goes down to less than a 1GB. I can't figure out why my thumbnail files are in gigabyte sizes...

Wait, are you using Windows? If so, iTunes creates a folder called "iPod Photo Cache" within your pictures folder. Delete that folder and see if it helps.

If not, well, 9000 photos are a lot. I don't think Apple was taking that kind of usage case into account when they designed the iPad photo app.

I have tried doing that multiple times...same problem comes back. I am starting to wonder if is in fact an issue with the volume of pictures or the size of the original files themselves (which is a mix of smaller size files from a point and shoot camera and larger DSLR files). Also was wondering if maybe my iTunes install was corrupt but I seriously doubt that...no other issues syncing or moving files.

I was struggling with a large Other Files (4gb) on my new iPad and went through the files using iPhone Explorer. Managed to remove a load of images which were not even on my iPad anymore. The main culprit was a garageband archive which was 1gb. Managed to get Other down to 1.5gb. Might also work for some of you until Apple provides a solution.
