Longtime Apple consumer here. The short version of my story is that right after the new Pro Vegas released in MBP, my work bought me a very nice, i9, 32 GB, 1TB, PV 20 MacBook Pro. After waiting for about 3 weeks to get it, finally started using it for about 3 weeks.

Then one day, it turned off and would not work again. The fans would kick on, TB would only show the ESC key, and display was crazy, mostly didn’t work, but sometimes showed like a reset screen. Anyways, I demanded a new replacement, but Apple would only repair it. So I let them send it out. A few days later, their repair facility called me and offered me the option of buying me a brand new one because they wanted to keep mine to study (and because the repair was probably very expensive). Another 3 weeks later (waiting around is really getting old), I received my brand new built to order replacement, and happily got working again. Until now...

Here I am, exactly 7 days after receiving my replacement, my almost $5,000 MBP is doing the EXACT same thing! I have photos and video of the problem. It’s just ridiculous. What do you guys think? Anyone else have the same problems? On round 2 of their MBP from late 18? It’s too unlikely that I just got 2 lemons in a row, there must be a serious design flaw that is causing this problem. I DONT WANT TO DEAL WITH IT. This is like class-action material in my opinion, it’s just that I don’t want to be the one to initiate it.

I’m particularly interested in hearing from others who got a BTO with Pro Vega upgrade. Perhaps this is a problem only for the BTOs?

Sounds like a video card failure? Doubt it is software, but are there any odd apps you are using? Fan controllers?

I think you were mostly unlucky. There have been some screen flickering reports with Vega 20, but nothing like what you are describing.

Wow, I just reset the PRAM and it booted up normally. I’m still concerned about it though... reseting PRAM, smc, etc didn’t work on my old one

Don't sit on it...I would get that one looked at too. The last thing you need is to have it go dead on you 366 days after purchase (assuming your work didn't purchase Apple Care +).

Side note: What do you do for work that buys you a $5000 notebook?

I’m all about reliability and if I can’t get it (future 2016 mbp owner here) at least the confidence that u are getting good support in case something goes wrong I would get it for check and try a third time if it fail perhaps try a slightly lesser configuration?

Whats it your business what he/she does for work?

I guess they would want to study this one as well.. I'd just go the repair route again, I can't imagine they would all be faulty.

Curiosity, interest, maybe just a random thought o_O It's community people tend to ask questions, nor are they always linear. No one is compelled to respond, so no harm, no foul. Same could be said for a myriad of posts yours & mine included, a point well worth considering...:p

Q-6

Return it and get one with the i7 (instead of the i9) ...

Fishrrman's off-the-wall observation about MacBook Pros:
The more you spend, the more likely something is gonna go wrong with it...

Probably something in your mix that is causing it. Hard to say...

I'm not deeply versed in Mac, but if resetting the PRAM fixed it then you're likely not having any hardware issue. I would try booting into recovery, wiping the machine, and slowly adding back software and workflow aspects until you have pinpointed the cause since you've had those across two separate machines (and no one else is jumping up and down about this issue).

Since its the first time I hear about this kind of symptoms, my guess would be that its probably related to your individual case. Maybe something about your unique software configuration or environmental factors (e.g. power supply quality) that triggers a bug with these laptops.

OP: What is your workload? What software are you using? Do you notice any odd behavior throughout your usage? Are you using any 3rd party peripherals? What about an external display?

Most of them are.

The funny thing is that if I were to open a thread called "The new MBP is the perfect laptop" (since you know, mine happens to work just fine), I imagine that people would chew me up alive in a instant :D

LOL, yes !

Mine works just fine, too. Every time I read these posts about serious issues, a demon in a dark corner of my mind can't help thinking, "Haha, poor sod ... better you than me !" Sick, I know.
