For the past two days/nights I've tried to download the Monterey public beta over HughesNet. HughesNet's "official" speed test web site TestMy.net claims I should be getting 35+ Mbps. In fact, the connection to Apple's download server is providing 1-4 Mbps. At that rate it would take several hours to download the 4.33 GB update. Then I have to work around HughesNet's "no data caps" data caps.

I've been a HughesNet customer, which is my ONLY internet provider option, for nearly five years. Over that time I have seen significant degradation in speed as my spot beam has apparently been wildly over-sold. After 3 PM it may take 15-30 seconds to download web pages.

I also believe that HughesNet is prioritizing traffic -- obviously to TestMy.net. On the other hand is HughesNet capping download speeds from Apple servers which might be consuming excessive bandwidth?

My Starlink kit will arrive Thursday. If it is able to somehow work with my minimal open sky site, I will drop HughesNet.

Are there any other HughesNet users experiencing similar problems downloading from Apple Servers?

Update:

I tried the Monterey beta update once again overnight. TestMy.net again reported >25 Mbps. Tonight's download was showing speeds in the range of 8-15 Mbps which was considerably better than the two prior nights. I let the download complete and now have Monterey 12.3 Beta 4 installed.

I would still like to hear from other HughesNet users on their downloading experiences.

I'd say it is a HughesNet problem. As Apple's servers are very fast for downloads. Except maybe on a new release day when they get hit hard by people updating.

Hopefully, Starlink works out for you.
