General Motors is to sell its Hummer brand to China's Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery for an undisclosed amount.

It is part of GM's plan to reinvent itself by concentrating on fewer brands following Monday's bankruptcy filing.

GM says it hopes the deal will save about 3,000 jobs in the US. Hummer will remain based in the US.

Tengzhong specialises in making equipment for the road, construction and energy industries.

It is based in China's Sichuan province.

Hummers were originally built as military off-road vehicles by a company called AM General.

GM bought the Hummer brand in 1999. Its sales have suffered as the gas-guzzling performance and military image have become less popular.

When it began the sale process a year ago, GM had hoped to make more than $500m (£302m), but analysts say that it is likely to have made about $100m from the sale.

Hummer, owned by the Chinese!? Did you ever think you'd see the day that happened?

Sad... very sad, but not totally unexpected
The trends toward the Chinese are difficult to ignore, and there is more to come

Woof, Woof - Dawg

Yep, I have worked for 2 companies what are in the process of setting up shop over there.
People I have talked to from both companies say it is horrible over there. Safety is a low priority.

Teh powers to be over in china are living large.
As are the executives in this country.
The company i work for has not shown a profit yet but the uppers seem to be making 600k and up every year?

How far will we go to just destroy this country

Hummer was the worst of trends for the American industry. When it should have gone to fuel efficient it went to Hummer.

China really must have money to burn. Either that or they're insane or drunk.

First MG/Rover and now Hummer? For the life of me I can't think of anything worse to buy!

Still, it's their money and they are welcome to spend it how they see fit. I for one welcome our New Overlords.:)

I can't imagine why anyone would waste their money on a crappy brand like Hummer.

I can't believe anyone actually wants to buy a Hummer anymore. I've never liked them.

so do the Chinese supply our military humvees now? lol

No. The military version is and always has been made by AM General.

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, June 3, 2009) -- The military's High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, also known as a "HMMWV" or a "Humvee," will continue to be made in the United States, by an American-owned company.

The recent announcement that Detroit-based General Motors will sell their Hummer brand of vehicles to Chinese-based Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company, has no bearing on the U.S. military's Humvee.

"The Army's Humvee and the civilian Hummer look similar and share a common appearance," said Army spokesman Lt. Col. Martin Downie. "But the rights to produce those two different vehicles are no longer owned by the same company."

Humvee manufacturer AM General is an American company based in South Bend, Indiana. The company produced the first 55,000 Humvees for the Army in 1985. The company continues today to produce the Humvee for the military.

In the early 1990s, AM General began producing a civilian version of the Humvee, calling it a "Hummer." But by the late 1990s, AM General had sold the Hummer name to General Motors.

While GM will sell the Hummer nameplate to Sichuan Tengzhong, the military's Humvee, its designs, unique performance capabilities and technologies will continue to be owned by, and the vehicle produced by, AM General.

I have several friends who own H2s and I never fail to be amazed at the greif they get from total strangers. We were gassing up on the way to hunting camp and this clown in a Prius was practically screaming at us! The H2 is a great off road vehicle, but kind of a bear around town. They are built on the Yukon/Tahoe platform and are mechanically the same. However, Yukon/Tahoe owners don't catch the crap Hummers do. I guess the Hummer is the target of choice for the enviro-nazis.

What is so wrong with having a brand compete against Jeep?

At least around where I live, Hummer's are seen as more of a status symbol then anything else, never to be used off road. If you want off road, buy a Jeep. It's ridiculous people think this way, but that's how it is and I see it as a huge waste to drive a vehicle like that if it's not going to be used for what it was built for.

Jeez, then don't blame the brand for people buying Hummers for not using them for what they were designed for. It is just like the people who call for the death of truck and SUV's punishing people like our family who need a vehicle like a Suburban for towing and hauling stuff because the majority bought them for image and status.

And Jeep eh. Daimler really screwed Chrysler up. The Compass and Patriot are complete jokes and hurts Jeep's image. Cherokee should have never been killed. Look what they are trying to do now with the Liberty and Commander trying to get Cherokee buyers to come back..... The only real Jeep remaining is the Wrangler and GC.

I like Hummers. The H3 gets 13-14 MPG in the city and 16-18 highway, so not really that bad. Many do worse.
I don't see why everybody hates them.

Great. Now when you drive a Hummer, you'll feel like you never did in a half hour.
